Cambridgeshire Tories have inserted a line in their proposed budget for next year of £100,000 to cover an increase in allowances paid to Councillors who already get over £7,000 per annum. But they could re-allocate it elsewhere. It is going to be a difficult choice for them.
They are faced with major pressures on all spending budgets.
Where could they allocate this £100,000 instead? Education, Social Services? Transport? Libraries or giving themselves a massive increase at a time when they are making over 100 people redundant? It is going to be tricky.
Careers guidance and leisure activities for young people will be further reduced this year. The Tories admit that service will be more 'thinly stretched'. In plain English, that means a harder time for people in need. Meanwhile a councillor allowance increase is in the budget!!
Oh, and at the same time they are proposing to increase council tax by 2.95%.. On a typical £1,047 levy that increase will amount to £30 extra of your money that they will take from you.
